Patanjali recommends an 8-limbed system of yoga called Ashtanga or Raja Yoga. Each limb of the tree represents a purifying yoga practice. These yoga practices seek to purify the body and mind so we can experience self-knowledge or self-realization. This is called Samadhi - meaning "the same as the highest". In this state we realize we are not alone. Our identification begins to shift from identifying with the fluctuations of the mind to identification with the Divine Self. The mind recedes into its source which is the same source of all creation. This experience is the realization of oneness of existence and the same as boundless joy - an experience beyond the senses.
Predominantly the 8-limbed system is a path of effort, however, the last 3 limbs are attained through ease and grace.
We have reviewed the first limb, the Yamas, which teach us how we should restrain our behavior toward others. The second limb, the Niyamas, are recommendations on behavior toward ourselves.
This weekend, we will explore the Asana and learn how Stira Sukham Asanam, "a steady and comfortable posture" can still the body and the mind and bring us to a place of wholeness and balance. Ahhhh.....
See you tonight!
Many blessings...
I'm truly grateful for the experience I had this past weekend and for the beautiful gals I got to experience it with. I come away from our yoga weekends being in awe of the spirit, compassion and giving nature of the group. The Habitat for Humanity project on Saturday was really amazing. How humbling it is to work with a group of people to help create a home for another human being. I can still hear the beautiful melody of hammers hitting nails...
ReplyDeleteLast weekend was full of new experiences for us!
ReplyDeleteThe gratitude that follows is in our hearts and irradiating to others! Thank you, Tracy, for the great lecture on the Sutras by Patanjali. The connection was energizing!

ReplyDeleteA friend sent this b lessing to me and I am sending it to all of you. "May there be peace within. May you trust that you are exactly where you are meant to be. May you not forget the infinite possibilit ies that are born of faith in yourself and others. May you use the gifts that you have received, and pass on the love that has been given to you. May you be content with yourself just the way you are. Let this knowledge settle into your bones, and allow your soul the freedom to sing, dance, praise and love. It is there for each and every one of us." Remember: "Life isn't about waiting for the storm to pass...It's about learning to dance in the rain."
